Flipping the Classroom- Action Research Plan
| ||||
Goal: The goal of my action research plan is see if student achievement in advanced mathematics is increased by using the flipped classroom model compared to the traditional teaching model.

Action Step(s):

Person(s) Responsible
Timeline: Start/End
Needed Resources
Evaluation
1. Students will take common summative assessments from previous years and their scores will be compared. Students' AP exams scores will also be used to compare the effectiveness of the flipped model

January 2013 to August 2013
The teachers will need access to last year’s scores as well as the scores for the previous classes AP exams.
A group of teachers will use this year’s scores on multiple assessments using the flipped approach and compare them with previous years data. This will include summative assessments during class and AP exams at the end of the year.
2. Students will be given a survey asking questions about the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model.
Myself
January 2013 to August 2013
Questions:
On a scale of 1 to 5 1 being very ineffective to 5 being very effective how would you rate the following:
1. How effective where online video lessons at preparing you for in class assignments?
2. How effective was this format while working on textbook assignments?
3. How effective was using the flipped classroom model at preparing you for the AP exam?
Question 4 would be open:
4. What changes if any would you make to the flipped classroom structure in the future?
Question 5
Would you recommend using the flipped classroom approach in the future? Y or N
I along with my site supervisor will use the data gained by surveying the student to analyze the effectiveness of the teaching model.
3. Interview a teacher on another campus that is using the flipped classroom model

Dewey
January 2013-May 2013
I will need time granted and permission from my supervisor. I will need a voice recorder and voice to text software
I will write a reflection over the interview and share it with my site supervisor and campus committee.
4. Join a flipped classroom committee

January 2013-December 2013
Data from teachers and questions that teachers need investigated. Problems teachers are having that are trying to flip their classrooms
We will be using the committee to investigate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom approach and looking at ways that we can help teachers to implement this model effectively in their classrooms.
5. Research the effectiveness of the flipped classroom on students and teachers.
Myself
January 2013-December 2013
I will need books from the library and access to the internet.
I will use the information to share with my committee and site supervisor to make adjustments to our flipped classroom model.
6. Attend a flipped classroom conference webinar.
Myself
January 2013-December 2013
Alan November Webinar at Allen High School
I will attend a webinar conference on flipped classroom to self reflect on what I am doing in my calculus classroom. I will use this reflection and adjust my lessons accordingly.

I am interested in the flipped classroom. Let me know how it works out. I will be following your progress.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking at Flipped Classrooms. Have you used Teach Canvas? I received an email today and signed up....just out of curiosity, here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/teachcanvas
ReplyDeleteBest of luck on your research.

ReplyDeleteCopy and paste this url. It is a webinar called "What Works in Flipped Classrooms."
Not sure if it will help you. Not sure what I can say about flipped classrooms, since I've never experienced or even knew anything about it until you mentioned it. Since then I've researched the subject a little. I've also started using another web tool in my classroom that is approved by our school district, the url is www.edmodo.com It is a facebook type interface but it the teacher is the moderator and can post assignments for students to complete at home and it is safe because no one can join without the teacher's permission. I've only listed my students. I'm still learning about that program.
Very interested in the Flipped Classroom. I have some great webinar links. I will get them to you first thing tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThis flipped classroom concept is interesting. I'd never heard of it before you mentioned it on the web conference a while back. Do you think you'll be able to accurately measure the success of this, especially with AP students who are high achieving students to begin with? Will you be comparing the students against themselves (i.e., last year v. this year) or a flipped AP class against a traditional AP class?
ReplyDeleteAre you currently using the flipped model? If you are, what about switching back to the traditional model for one day, week or unit. The students would be able to compare the two different models. I'm not sure if it possible...but a suggestion....
ReplyDeleteGreat project...Good luck...
I am currently using the flipped classroom model since the beginning of the year. I want to make sure that all the students are taught using this model this year to compare with previous year's data. I am considering next year doing a chapter or two with one class using the traditional model and the other using the flipped classroom model. I feel the classes are doing better this year so far but I have not analyzed the data yet.
DeleteI am interested in your project and the results. I attended the Alan November summer conferences for the past two summers, along with different flipped conferences held by our district. Your project looks really good, and it looks like you have covered all the bases. What I have heard/ noticed about the flipped classroom is ;it can be done really well or really bad. You mentioned the Alan November webinar, and I know my principal mentioned another Alan November learning for us to attend. I am wondering if we might be in the same district. ??? I wish you the best of luck on this project, it looks great!!!
ReplyDeleteI like the concept and curious to follow the progress. I wonder if you are going to include parent feedback into survey's? Also if there are any contingency plans for student support group meetings after school to meet and view the material together? What was the initial response of the students to the program? Their expectations? Be interesting to see if the program meets these expectations or not. Exciting program! Good luck
